A little bit of culture…

Precious time spent with Australian Indigenous craftsperson Aunty Rose from the Torres Strait Islands and with local Fijian village women representatives.

During the last couple of weeks I have had the good fortune of spending time with Aunty Rose, an Australian Indigenous Craft person from the Torres Strait Islands. The local Women’s Leadership Group in the Fijian Northern Division organised Aunty Rose to spend time with local Fijian women from many of the villages around Savusavu and also Taveuni to teach them  Indigenous Australian beadwork. Aunty Rose was also sponsored by the Australian Volunteers Program.

The Fijian women were very enthusiastic and very creative with their work and already a couple of the women have started to sell their creations to local villagers and have orders for more in various colours.

The two videos below are the Fijian ladies singing a local farewell song and then Aunty Rose singing her local Indigenous farewell song. The exchange was very successful with all the women wanting Aunty Rose to return for a longer period to teach them and interact with them more.

To make it perfect, Aunty Rose absolutely loved her time with the women and being in Savusavu and Taveuni and cant wait to return!
